Customer Review: This clay pot is delicate but it does the job very well if you want your food to retain all of its’ nutrients and be very healthy and tasty! Using herbs and spices and some liquid but not much as the clay retains moisture and flavor is terrific. Size of the pot will cook a meal for two. Customer Reviews

Customer Review: Very smart functional design and well made. I use it strictly for cooking soupy pinto beans with bacon or beef/pork short ribs in it… delicious flavor. High quality… very well packaged.IMPORTANT TIPS: To avoid cracks, it must be cured properly(immerse in water for 2-3 days… don’t rush the process. ALSO, increase the heat gradually and low boil or simmer. AVOID high heat… there is no need for it, unglazed clay retains very good heat. To avoid mold: Wash with coarse salt and water ; dry it well(sunlight helps). Do not store it with the lid on it. Occasional immersing in water helps avoid cracks.FIRST TIME USE: Just low boil water with garlic, etc and discard… get rid of impurities. THEN start cooking in it. Hope it helps avoid disappointments.

Customer Review: Used it only 3 times and this pot got a huge crack. I was trying to cook and noticed smoke coming from under the pot. Thank God, I was there since the leaked grease caused a smal fire under the pot which i wad quickly able to put out. For an expensive pot like this, i expected years of use but only got 3 uses..very dissapointed.

7. 4.7-Quart Clay Cooking Pot

4.7-Quart Clay Cooking Pot with Lid - Ceramic Pot for Stewing and Soup

This is a versatile, mid-sized clay cooking pot designed for general stovetop and oven use. Made from a blend of spodumene and kaolin, it promises even heat distribution for slow-cooking. It features dual handles for safe lifting and is marketed as heat-resistant. A key detail is the permanently vented lid and handles with a wood-grain coating, which clarifies its primary use case: it’s a stovetop pot first and foremost.

Key Features That Stand Out

✓ Versatile 4.7-Quart Size: Good capacity for family stews, soups, and hot pots.
✓ Dual Handles: Sturdy, heat-resistant handles for safe handling.
✓ Heat-Resistant Material: Withstands temperatures from 20°C to 450°C (68°F – 842°F).
✓ Stovetop & Oven Compatible: Works on gas/electric stoves and in ovens (lid handle caution).
✓ Permanent Lid Vents: Small holes allow for continuous steam release.

Why We Recommend It

We recommend this pot for cooks who primarily need a reliable stovetop clay pot for soups, stews, and hot pot. Its main strength is its stovetop performance and manageable size. The permanent vent holes mean you don’t need to soak the lid, which is a convenience. Just be aware of the handle limitations for oven use.

Best For

Stovetop-centric cooking (soups, stews, hot pot), cooks who want a vented lid without soaking, and those needing a medium-sized, all-around clay pot.

Pros and Cons

Pros:
  • Excellent heat retention on the stovetop.
  • Convenient permanently vented lid (no soaking required).
  • Good size for everyday family meals.
  • Handles are cool to the touch during stovetop use.
Cons:
  • The lid handle and pot handles have a vinyl/plastic coating that is NOT oven-safe.
  • Not suitable for oven use with the lid; only the pot body is oven-safe.
  • Some users note minor cosmetic imperfections and asymmetrical handles.

Customer Reviews

Customer Review: It’s a good buy for the price. It’s nice looking and practical. The only downside is the imperfections on details, such as some spots on the lid and asymmetrical handles.

Customer Review: Okay, I needed a mid-size pot, so I decided to give this one a try. For some reason, the opt is a bit confusing to me. Don’t get me wrong, on the stove top it is a great little pot. Takes a little longer for the stuff to heat up, but on the stove it holds the heat very well. It would be good for stewing meats or soups, maybe even an asian-type hot pot. What is confusing are the handles. They looked like wood, but they are not. They are clay like the pot with wood grain sticker on top covered by some kind of coating. So I know why, you can’t put this pot in the over, that plastic or vinyl coating atop the woodgrain sticker would melt right off. i guess it keeps the handles coller on the stovetop so you can use the handles to carry the pot, but in an oven, it would be a danger. Now the lid. There are three vent holes in the lid that are permanent. So the lid will always vent. They are small pencil diameter holes so pretty small but the lid will never be a complete cover. Then the top handle on the lid, again, it is confusing. It says it is wood on the sales text. But I don’t think so. I think it is also ceramic, covered over by a vinyl sticker of some sort. Don’t get me wrong, it works well as a handle for the lid. But you can’t put the lid in the oven, because the sticker would burn right up. Maybe they put the sticker to make the handle less hot? I don’t know. But the handle is one piece with the top, it is not attached to the top. Which is why I conclude that the wood grain is just a fake sticker. So, if you need a stovetop pot that can only be used on the stove and never in the oven, then this is for you. And you don’t mind the fake wood grain stickers or decals or whatever they are.

8. Hakan Suphan Handmade 4.7-Quart Clay Cooking Pot

Hakan Suphan Handmade 4.7-Quart Clay Cooking Pot with Lid - Unglazed T

This is the smaller, 4.5-liter sibling of the Hakan Suphan pot reviewed earlier. It shares the same commitment to 100% natural, unglazed terracotta and handmade Turkish craftsmanship. The more compact size makes it more manageable for everyday family meals while still offering the superior, earthy flavor that only a pure, unglazed clay pot can provide. It’s a fantastic choice for those wanting to try traditional clay cooking without committing to a massive pot.

Key Features That Stand Out

✓ 100% Natural Unglazed Terracotta: Pure clay, no chemicals or glazes.
✓ Handmade in Turkey: Each pot is unique with slight variations in color and texture.
✓ Versatile 4.7-Quart (4.5L) Size: Perfect for everyday stews, rice dishes, and braises for 3-4 people.
✓ Stovetop & Oven Safe: Suitable for direct flame and oven cooking (with proper care).
✓ Authentic Flavor: Porous clay imparts a subtle, earthy taste to food.

Why We Recommend It

We recommend this smaller Hakan Suphan pot for cooks who desire the authentic, unglazed clay experience but find the 7-quart size too large for regular use. It’s a more approachable entry point into traditional terracotta cooking, offering excellent flavor in a more practical package. The same care and curing instructions apply.

Best For

Smaller households (3-4 people), cooks new to unglazed clay pots who want a smaller trial size, and those making daily stews or rice dishes where a huge pot is overkill.

Pros and Cons

Pros:
  • Provides the pure, authentic flavor of unglazed terracotta.
  • More manageable size than giant cazuelas for everyday cooking.
  • Beautiful, handmade rustic appearance.
  • Versatile for both stovetop and oven (with careful temperature management).
Cons:
  • Requires the same intensive initial curing and careful ongoing maintenance.
  • High risk of cracking if temperature changes are too rapid.
  • Not dishwasher safe; must be washed by hand.
  • Quality control seems inconsistent, with some users reporting cracks after few uses.

Made from premium, lead-free ceramic fired twice with a natural glaze, it’s incredibly versatile. ✓ Multi-Surface Compatible: Works on gas/electric stoves, in oven, broiler, microwave.
✓ Dishwasher Safe: Easy cleanup, though hand-washing is recommended for longevity.
✓ Premium, Safe Ceramic: Lead, cadmium, and arsenic free; tested for heavy metals.
✓ Made in Korea: High-quality manufacturing with authentic design.

Why We Recommend It

We recommend the Crazy Korean Cooking Dolsot for its sheer versatility and specialized performance. It’s not a general stew pot, but for Korean cuisine (and similar dishes like Spanish paella), it’s unbeatable. The fact that it can go from stovetop to table to fridge is a huge practical advantage.

Best For

Lovers of Korean food (bibimbap, jjigae), anyone who loves crispy, scorched rice (tatlı ekmek), and cooks who want a single, ultra-versatile bowl for multiple cooking and serving tasks.

Pros and Cons

Pros:
  • Incredibly versatile; works on almost any heat source and in appliances.
  • Creates the perfect crispy, toasted rice bottom (dolsot bibimbap).
  • Excellent heat retention keeps food sizzling at the table.
  • Dishwasher safe for easy cleanup.
Cons:
  • Specialized shape is less ideal for liquid-heavy stews or large roasts.
  • Can be very hot to the touch; requires care when handling.
  • The included plastic trivet, while functional, may not suit all aesthetic preferences.

Customer Reviews

Customer Review: I bought this awhile ago and realized I haven’t left a review. I love this dolsot, it’s well made and perfect for making jjigae. The large pot holds enough serving for one person. I will not hesitate to buy another one or any other product from the same manufacturer. I was satisfied with this purchase.

Customer Review: These ceramic bowls are great!! Where have they been all my life? Stove top (gas or electric), oven, dishwasher, microwave, refrigerator, what’s not to love? Saves so much hassle to be able to use one pot for cooking, serving, storing in the fridge and reheating. I have an electric glass cook top and it works great. I recently made rice in it on the stovetop (I do not have a rice cooker) and it was wonderful. It stayed so hot for such a long time and was perfectly fluffy. Last night I made bibimbap and it stayed hot for hours. Ignore the reviews about the plastic trivet melting. It is made of melamine and stands up to the heat just fine. That’s what it’s for. Obviously the reviewers didn’t even try it. To be on the safe side, I also used pieces of wood board to keep the heat from radiating through to my wooden dining table. I have four of the smallest ones, two large ones and the number 4 tiger dolsot. I’m thinking about getting four of the medium sized ones since I think they will be good for generous individual servings. The large size is too large for individual servings unless it’s for a 16 year old adolescent boy. The smallest ones (16 oz) are a little too small for a single serving of bibimbap but would be good for a soup or side dish or baked dessert. They clean up well and go through the dishwasher just fine. These are a little more expensive than the ones I saw in the Korean market the other day, but the quality of these is significantly better and they are made in Korea instead of God knows where. I recommend you get the ones with lids. Very happy with my purchase.

10. 1.9 Quart Clay Ceramic Pot with Lid

1.9 Quart Clay Ceramic Pot with Lid - Heat-Resistant for Hot Pot, Soup

This is a compact, heat-resistant clay casserole that’s ideal for individual servings, side dishes, or small-batch cooking. Crafted from a blend of clay, loess, and lithium feldspar, it’s designed to resist water absorption and thermal shock. Its small 1.9-quart size makes it incredibly manageable, and it’s compatible with most stovetops (except induction). It’s a great little pot for hot pot, soup, or a small roast.

Key Features That Stand Out

✓ Compact 1.9-Quart Size: Perfect for 1-2 servings, side dishes, or small recipes.
✓ Prevents Cracking & Warping: High-temperature fired material resists thermal shock.
✓ Non-Porous Surface: Effectively prevents water absorption and staining.
✓ Wide Stovetop Compatibility: Works on gas and electric stoves (not induction).
✓ Heat-Resistant: Safe for high-temperature cooking applications.

Why We Recommend It

We recommend this pot for singles, couples, or anyone who needs a small, reliable clay pot for individual meals or sides. Its thermal shock resistance is a key selling point, making it more forgiving than traditional unglazed terracotta. It’s a no-fuss, practical choice for small-scale clay pot cooking.

Best For

Singles or couples, making individual hot pot or soup, cooking small side dishes, and those wanting a small, durable clay pot with better crack resistance.

Pros and Cons

Pros:
  • Perfect size for 1-2 person meals or side dishes.
  • Good thermal shock resistance compared to raw terracotta.
  • Non-porous surface is hygienic and stain-resistant.
  • Lightweight and easy to handle.
Cons:
  • Too small for family meals or large roasts.
  • Not induction compatible.
  • Lacks the pure, earthy flavor of unglazed clay pots.
  • Some users note the handles can get hot on the stovetop.

Customer Reviews

Customer Review: It is excellent. I wanted to get it because 80% of the nutritious elements of the lentils and Vegetables cooked are not lost, like it does in other types of pots. Surprisingly, the taste is also remarkably better! Once cooked, it retains theTemperature for 3-4 hours.

Customer Review: Looks cute, works well. Has held up over months of use. Cooks well on both stove and in oven. No issues with food sticking to sides but I’ve definitely only used them with a fair amount of liquid or oil.

Complete Buying Guide for Clay Cooking Pots

Essential Factors We Consider

When choosing a clay cooking pot, the first major decision is between glazed and unglazed. Glazed pots (like the Romertopf and Eurita models) have a non-stick, easy-clean surface and are more beginner-friendly. Unglazed pots (like the Hakan Suphan and Swadeshi Blessings) are porous, require curing and special care, but impart a more distinct, earthy flavor and are completely chemical-free. Consider the material: true terracotta vs. clay/ceramic blends. Check for safety certifications (lead/cadmium free). Size and shape matter—a round Dutch oven is versatile, a tagine is for specific dishes, a kadai is for frying/stir-frying. Finally, note the heat source compatibility: some are stovetop-only, some are oven-safe, and some (like the Dolsot) can handle direct flame.

Budget Planning

You can find a functional, safe clay pot from $30 to over $150. The best budget picks are hybrid models like the Eurita Clay Roaster, which offer a great balance of safety, performance, and easy cleaning at a mid-range price. For the most authentic experience, be prepared to invest in a quality handmade unglazed piece from brands like Hakan Suphan or Swadeshi Blessings, and factor in the time cost of proper curing. The premium, user-friendly option is the Romertopf Culinario, which commands a higher price for its brand reputation and non-stick convenience.

Final Thoughts

A clay cooking pot is more than just a vessel; it’s a tool that connects you to ancient culinary techniques. The best one for you depends entirely on your cooking style, willingness to maintain the pot, and the types of dishes you love. If you want healthy, flavorful one-pot meals with minimal fuss, a glazed hybrid is your best bet. If you are a culinary adventurer seeking deep, traditional flavors and don’t mind a ritual, an unglazed terracotta pot will reward you. For Korean or Moroccan specialties, consider a dedicated Dolsot or Tagine. There’s a perfect clay pot out there for every kitchen.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Do clay cooking pots contain lead or cadmium?

A: Reputable brands, especially those sold in the US and EU, are rigorously tested and should be certified lead-free and cadmium-free. Always look for safety certifications. The Eurita and Romertopf models are explicitly tested. Unglazed, natural terracotta from trusted artisans is also inherently free of these metals, as they are not used in the clay or firing process. Avoid cheap, unknown brands, especially with bright, colorful glazes, as these can be sources of heavy metals.

Q: How do I season or cure a new clay pot?

A: The process varies. For unglazed pots (Hakan Suphan, Swadeshi Blessings), you typically need to soak the entire pot (lid and base) in water for 24-72 hours. Then, you often apply a thin layer of oil to the interior and heat it gently to create a natural, non-stick patina. Always follow the manufacturer’s specific instructions. For glazed pots, you usually only need to soak the unglazed lid (if it has one) before first use. The glazed interior is ready to cook on immediately.

Q: Can I use a clay pot on an induction stovetop?

Q: Why did my clay pot crack?

A: Thermal shock is the #1 cause. This happens when the pot experiences a rapid temperature change—like taking a hot pot from the oven and running it under cold water, placing a cold pot on a high flame, or even storing it in a drafty, cold area. Always heat a clay pot gradually (start on low heat), avoid extreme temperature swings, and never add cold liquid to a hot pot. Proper curing for unglazed pots also prevents cracks from forming during first use.

Q: How do I clean and store a clay pot?

A: For glazed pots, let them cool, then wash with warm soapy water and a non-abrasive sponge. They are often dishwasher safe, but handwashing prolongs life. For unglazed pots, avoid soap as it can be absorbed. Use hot water and a stiff brush or scrub with coarse salt. After washing, dry thoroughly, preferably in sunlight. Store with the lid OFF to prevent moisture buildup and potential mold. Some enthusiasts occasionally re-season unglazed pots by oiling and heating them.
