Customer Reviews

Customer Review: After I learned to season it quick like 7 times, and started using a bush and cup with a dap of oil on the side I kept around to wipe with oil when done, and learned to due to size I needed to have rag on edge of sink when dumping out water, and then I often but not always heat up water in electric kettle to pour in when done cooking in order to not shock it. I find after all this that I actually do basically no scrubbing, just a bit of scraping with the metal spatula while the hot water is in it. And then I use a silicone handle on one side I had gotten and I want to get the other side for the silicone side to hold but I just use a pot holder for the other side, thicker one. But I find now that this is an ideal pan to cook everything and anything and many things. I just leave it on top of my stove for daily use. And the weight, for the same reason a mechanics arms are big while not lifting, their muscles are big purely due to making the same motion every day repetitively with the wrench. It’s called a hermetic stressor, the same way weight session (more stressful obviously) and a hot sauna, cold plunge, run, etc, are all good forms of stress that cause adaptation, So to does this just cause you to lift a heavier pot a few times a day as you cook. For vast majority of us it’s nothing. But I told my mom for instance that she should use it and she complained how heavy it was, and my brutal honest response was “that’s exactly why you need to be using it because it’s not like you are working out”. It won’t make you buff, just a bit heavier than a similiar size pan, but for the older crowd who find it important to get their exercises in at the pool and such, this is no different. Plus, once I learned to clean efficiently and season a couple times, it’s a god send of a pan. I love it.

Customer Review: TL;DR: I have one and I love it. But it works different than a regular pan. I picked one of these up about four years ago during the COVID lockdown. It’s a solid workhorse that I have been using for almost all personal cooking. I believe these are still proudly made in the USA, and they are still affordable compared to other cookware. The skillet is especially good for making steaks, burgers, omelettes, bacon, and seared onions. I’ve been using it a lot to cook marinated beef, pork, and chicken from Hmart (the Korean supermarket). Another favorite dish is roasted sweet potatoes. I’ve been using avocado oil as a healthier cooking oil. I have only used it on the stovetop, but it can also cook inside the oven. The 10.25″ size has worked well for me. I usually fire it up to cook a week’s worth of meals. At this point, it would be worth having a second one for parallel processing.

Customer Reviews

Customer Review: Excellent set! I purchased these after taking leisure classes at the Baton Rouge Culinary Institute, where we were learning Cajun cooking. I noticed these were the types of pans used to prepare some amazing dishes, so I knew I needed a set for myself. The quality is outstanding. The three sizes with matching lids are perfect for searing, slow cooking, and building deep flavor. The silicone handle covers are very practical and make handling the skillets much safer and more comfortable. Most cast iron sets don’t include lids, so I truly appreciate that this one does. The lids fit snugly and seal completely without ventilation gaps, which makes it possible to prepare even more recipes. I’m very happy with my purchase, definitely a great addition to my kitchen!

Customer Review: Love my big skillet! Nothing beats cooking in cast-iron pans. This is a good quality pan and I like the little extra handle cover they provide. Great pan, fair price.

Customer Reviews

Customer Review: This is a wordy review, but since you are thinking of paying a lot for a pan I thought this would be helpful. First, why is the expense justified? The best pans ever are 80-120 years old. They were cast in fine sand molds which resulted in a smooth cooking surface. Unfortunately the process resulted in the workers dying of silicosis. So, thankfully that process is not coming back, ever. These pans are made in the US in a labor intensive process that doesn’t kill people but creates a similar smooth surface pan. Some people do OK with the pebbly surfaced pans, but I have never had luck with them, so I gave this a try. I have several vintage pans (Wagner, vintage Lodge) along with some modern pans. The Wagners are great but hard to come by, and a good one will cost you just as much as this new pan. Needed a new pan as the vintage ones had the audacity to warp over their hundred year lifespan. So: Unpacking. The pan was in perfect condition. Perfectly flat with no wobble. No casting imperfections. The seasoning was in perfect condition. Color a bit darker than what I saw online, more of a saddle brown. Seasoning: As I said, perfect condition. Fried an egg right out of the box as a test. Did not stick and easily removed with a spatula. Did not slide like a hockey puck, but wasn’t expecting that with a new pan. Immediately did three more rounds of seasoning with avocado oil which darkened the pan considerably (which I expected, it’s iron after all).

Customer Review: The Stargazer 10-inch cast iron skillet is a standout in the world of cast iron cookware. From the moment I unboxed it, I could tell this was a high-quality piece. The sleek, polished cooking surface is a game-changer—it’s incredibly smooth, making it more naturally non-stick compared to traditional rough-surfaced cast iron. This also makes cleaning much easier, as food doesn’t cling as stubbornly. The design is both functional and elegant. The handle is longer than most, which not only provides better leverage but also stays cooler for longer when cooking on the stovetop. The flared sides and curved lip are fantastic additions, allowing for easy pouring without spills—a small detail that makes a big difference. In terms of performance, it heats evenly and retains heat exceptionally well, just as you’d expect from good cast iron. It’s perfect for everything from searing steaks to frying eggs or baking cornbread. Once properly seasoned, it performs like a dream, and the seasoning only improves with use.

Customer Reviews

Customer Review: I love this thing! So far everything I’ve cooked in it has turned out perfectly and cleaning it is a breeze, and after seasoning it nothing sticks in it or burns to the surface. Even with the messiest I’ve gotten in I’ve gotten it cleaned up in minutes after a quick wipe with paper towels and a light scrub with some course salt. Also, this is a BIG skillet, big enough that I’m able to cook entire meals in the thing with room to spare. The only downsides someone might have with it is that it might be heavier and larger than they’re expecting, so make sure you have some place nice and dry to keep it stored properly when not in use and try not to drop it on your foot or something.

Customer Review: Not too long ago, my wife and I had been discussing replacing our most used aluminum, Teflon coated skillet. The Teflon was chipping off, and my wife and I didn’t think that was very healthy. We have a Lodge 12″ cast iron skillet, but we needed something bigger since we were used to the size of our old 14″ skillet. We decided to take a chance on the Lodge 17″ skillet, and we’re very happy with our decision. The pan came to us double boxed, and packed very well for a 15 Lbs. package. Even though the pan is pre-seasoned, I recommend seasoning it yourself. This is very easy, and it takes only an hour. Slather the inside of the pan with the oil of your choice, I use canola, but any will do. Turn your oven on to 350 degrees, then put your pan upside down onto the top rack, and cook your pan for an hour. If you go hotter, the oil in the pan will start smoking really badly. Also, put a piece of tin foil on the rack under the pan to catch the drippings. This pan is huge, very heavy and stable. Having such a large cooking surface is a joy. If you use this pan on your stove you can put this pan across two burners, although on mine it makes it across 1 1/2 burners. Make sure that you allow longer for cast iron to heat up, but once it’s hot, it will retain the heat very nicely.

7. Lodge 12-Inch Cast Iron Skillet: Pre-Seasoned with Dual Assist Handles for Oven, Stove, Grill, Campfire; Durable Black.

Lodge 12-Inch Cast Iron Skillet: Pre-Seasoned with Dual Assist Handles for Oven, Stove, Grill, Campfire; Durable Black.

The Lodge 12-inch cast iron skillet with dual assist handles is the perfect all-around size for most cooking tasks. The additional handles make lifting this moderately heavy pan much safer and easier. Pre-seasoned and ready to use, it’s ideal for searing, frying, baking, and even works in your air fryer.

Key Features That Stand Out

  • 12-inch size perfect for most family cooking tasks
  • Dual assist handles for safer lifting and maneuvering
  • Pre-seasoned with natural oil for non-stick performance
  • Oven safe up to 500°F and compatible with all heat sources
  • Fits perfectly in many air fryers for expanded cooking options

Why We Recommend It

This is arguably the most versatile size in the Lodge lineup. The 12-inch surface is large enough for most recipes while the dual handles make it manageable despite the weight. It’s a workhorse that can go from stovetop to oven to campfire with ease. The pre-seasoning means you can start cooking immediately.

Best For

Families, home cooks who want a reliable all-purpose skillet, and anyone who appreciates the safety of dual handles on a heavy pan.

Pros and Cons

Pros:
  • Perfect size for most cooking tasks
  • Dual handles improve safety and control
  • Pre-seasoned and ready to use
  • Fits in many air fryers
Cons:
  • Still quite heavy for its size
  • Rough surface texture
  • Takes longer to heat than smaller pans

Customer Reviews

Customer Review: Another excellent pan to add to my Lodge collection. I have had other cast iron pots and pans and I gave them all away once my mom gave me my first Lodge frying pan for Christmas. This pan is utilitarian since you can use it to fry on the stovetop, broil and bake in the oven, roast in the bbq or over a campfire, and it fits perfectly into my airfryer. This 12″ is the perfect size for all-around cooking needs. I use it primarily as a baking dish for casseroles and seating meat, but its thickness provides precision heat distribution to ensure food cooks evenly on the stovetop or open flame. It’s pre-seasoned so its ready to go out of the box and cleanup is a snap. In my opinion, Lodge makes the best pans for the best price.

Customer Review: I wanted to make fried potatoes & onions but knew it is best done in a cast iron skillet. Amazon to the rescue! In two days my order arrived! This Lodge skillet & lid is amazing! Unlike my cast irons from past years, this has a double handle which makes it easier to hold — for those of us who are a bit older. I washed this skillet first with a tiny dot of detergent, rinsed well & dried it then put it on top of the eye with a little heat to finish drying. I then added a tiny amount of oil, used a paper towel to spread the oil inside the skillet and on the edges (and lid). I added my oil before adding my onions & peppers, cooking just until they were transparent, then add potatoes & seasonings, and cook on medium temperature til done. OMG! Just like Mom use to make them!! The fried potatoes and onions turned out great with a bit of a ‘crust’ around edges. Then I wanted fried apples to go with my Oatmeal (I’d made on the side.) They were so good! I scrubbed pany remaining potatoes out, wiped with a paper towel. Then added my vegan butter, let it melt and sizzle before adding sliced apples. Tonight, homemade vegan Naan! I cannot wait to use this skillet again! I love to make cornbread, pancakes, and fried foods also using cast iron. (Note: tomatoe based dishes don’t work well in cast iron skillets!) Lodge packaged the product well and gave clear instructions. Foods really taste better to me when using cast iron than using the typical non-stick pan.

Cons:
  • Requires significant storage space
  • Heavy overall weight
  • No lids for the smaller skillets

Customer Reviews

Customer Review: I carefully reviewed both the positive and negative reviews on Amazon before purchasing this set. I could not be happier with the product I received. I went ahead and seasoned them a few times after receiving, although I’m not sure that was necessary. They maintain heat well, and cook evenly. I’ve used on both the stove top and in the oven. The dutch oven cooked my sourdough bread to perfection.

Customer Review: These cast iron pots and skillets are great! They do the cooking to near perfection. My advice is to take care of them as described being specific with the instructions provided. I kept these pans out and available with each one nesting with the provided paper that was with the product so they all fit together well. These are not suitable for acidic dishes nor leaving the lid on for too long after cooling thus creating condensation thereby potentially rusting the underside of the lid or even the exposed pot. It doesn’t matter while cooking or heating just afterwards. They are heavy as expected, safe using your favorite potholder, as well as are very versatile for so many dishes. Yesterday I braised, marinated and cooked short ribs, potatoes and carrots in another pan and cornbread in another size to create my own feast. Be creative and know you’ll get some iron added to your diet.

Pros and Cons

Pros:
  • Exceptionally smooth cooking surface
  • Lighter than traditional cast iron
  • Excellent heat distribution
  • Beautiful craftsmanship and finish
Cons:
  • Higher price point
  • Still requires seasoning maintenance
  • Handle can get hot during cooking

Customer Reviews

Customer Review: I’m very impressed with this skillet. Before ordering I read how non-stick Field touted their products, but I was still a bit skeptical. I washed and seasoned it as per the instruction card that came with the pan, and the first time I used it – it was indeed smooth on the surface and non-stick. The heat distribution was just as you would expect from a quality cast iron pan. The 10.25″ is perfect for two people, and, while a tad bit spendy, it’s a good price for a high quality pan. One can imagine the work that goes into a pan of this quality.

Customer Review: I finally gave up on a #6 cast iron pan I bought over 30 years ago. It never performed as well as my older classic pans (a larger 10 3/4 inch and a smaller 8 inch) and it was not completely flat. It rocked on our glass top stove. So I used some gift money and bought a Field #6. What a difference! It fits perfectly on our glass top induction stove (no rocking), and it has performed every bit as well as our well seasoned and beloved classic pans. And it’s lighter and easier to handle. It’s the pan I reach for most of the time now.

Complete Buying Guide for Best Cast Iron Skillets

Essential Factors We Consider

When choosing a cast iron skillet, consider size, pre-seasoning, handle design, and whether it includes a lid. The most common sizes are 8, 10, and 12 inches—choose based on how many people you typically cook for. Pre-seasoning saves you time and effort, though you can always add more layers. Handle design matters for safety: traditional handles get hot, while some brands offer silicone covers or dual handles for better grip. A lid adds versatility for braising and baking. Also consider surface smoothness—premium brands like Field and Stargazer offer smoother surfaces that are less sticky. Weight is another factor; heavier pans retain heat better but are harder to handle.

Budget Planning

Cast iron skillets range from $20 for basic models to over $100 for premium brands. Lodge offers excellent value for money, with reliable performance at affordable prices. Mid-range options like Cuisinel add accessories like lids and silicone handles. Premium brands like Field and Stargazer cost more but offer smoother surfaces, lighter weight, and American craftsmanship. Set your budget based on how often you’ll use it and your desired features. For most home cooks, a Lodge skillet in the 10-12 inch range offers the best balance of price and performance.

Final Thoughts

A cast iron skillet is a lifelong investment. With proper care, it can last generations and even improve with age. Consider your cooking style, kitchen setup, and budget to choose the perfect skillet. Whether you go for the affordable and reliable Lodge or a premium brand like Field or Stargazer, you’ll enjoy the unparalleled cooking performance of cast iron. Remember to season and care for your skillet properly, and it will become more non-stick with each use. Happy cooking!

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How do I season a cast iron skillet?

A: Seasoning is the process of applying a thin layer of oil and heating it to create a non-stick surface. Most new skillets come pre-seasoned, but you can add more layers by rubbing a thin layer of high-smoke-point oil (like grapeseed or canola) on the cooking surface and baking it in the oven at 375°F for an hour. Repeat as needed to build up a smooth, black patina.

Q: Can I use soap on my cast iron skillet?

A: Yes, you can use a small amount of mild dish soap to clean your skillet. The seasoning is baked-on oil, not a surface coating, so soap won’t remove it. Just avoid harsh detergents and scrubbers that can strip the seasoning. After washing, dry thoroughly and apply a light coat of oil to prevent rust.

Q: Why is my cast iron skillet rusting?

A: Rust occurs when the skillet is exposed to moisture without proper seasoning or storage. To prevent rust, always dry the skillet thoroughly after washing (even heat it on the stove to evaporate any remaining water) and apply a light coat of oil. If rust appears, scrub it off with steel wool or a scrubber and re-season the pan.

Q: Is cast iron cookware safe?

A: Yes, cast iron is non-toxic and safe. It doesn’t contain PFAS or other chemicals found in non-stick coatings. It can even add small amounts of iron to your food, which is beneficial for many people, especially those with iron deficiencies. Just avoid cooking highly acidic foods (like tomato sauce) for long periods, as they can strip seasoning and impart a metallic taste.

Q: Can I use cast iron on glass-top stoves?

A: Yes, but be careful to avoid dragging the skillet, which can scratch the glass. Lift it instead. Also, ensure the bottom is flat and clean to prevent damage. Some cast iron pans may have slight imperfections that could scratch, so check your pan’s bottom before use. The Lodge and Field skillets we recommend have smooth, flat bottoms that are generally safe for glass tops.

Cast iron skillets are a timeless addition to any kitchen, offering unmatched durability and cooking performance. Whether you choose the affordable and reliable Lodge or a premium brand like Field or Stargazer, you’re investing in cookware that will last a lifetime. Remember to season and care for your skillet properly, and it will only get better with age. Ready to start cooking?
