Customer Review: This Cuisinart CGG-306 portable propane grill has been a fantastic addition to our Phoenix backyard gatherings and camping trips! The stainless steel build looks sleek and feels super durable, while the two independent 10,000 BTU burners (20,000 total) heat up fast and give excellent control—perfect for searing steaks on one side and keeping veggies gentle on the other. Customer Reviews

Customer Review: Bought this grill for my dirt bike trail riding/racing trips. Most riding places here in the PNW only allow gas cooking as the fire hazard increases when the riding season approaches. We went to the desert 100 race with a small charcoal pit only to find out that we couldn’t use it. Everyone else there had some type of gas cooking devise, griddles, pits, etc… Soooo….I bought this one. I’ve only used it once as I just got it. I put it to the test with chicken thighs, bone in and skin on.Heat distribution – This seems fine but as with all pits you’ll have some hot spots. Nothing too crazy on this one though. My hot spots are where the darker chicken thighs are towards the front and one small one towards the back. See the 3rd picture. The pit ran a little hot on low, again nothing crazy but just a bit hot in my opinion, it cooked the chicken pretty quick. Cooked the chicken to 203 F and skin was nice and crispy with only one flip. Kept the lid on it and flame ups were zero and it only flamed up when I opened the lid. A quick spray with a water filled spray bottle worked perfectly. The heat shield/drip shield worked like a champ. I think keeping the heat/drip shield clean will be the key in avoiding flame ups.I didn’t time the cook so I’m guessing here. I think it took less than 25 minutes to cook the 4 pieces of chicken. I started with a full little propane bottle and when done I felt like it only used maybe a quarter or so of propane, plenty leftover to do more cooking. Pretty good consumption rate.I didn’t not run the pit on high for 10 to 15 minutes prior to cooking! To me this pit gets way too hot for that, I did run it on low until the smoke stopped, I guess it was burning off the manufacturing preservation oil.I did set up a board to block the wind however I took it down after the pictures and the pit did fine, wind was only 2 to 4 mph, so not much.Overall – Great pit so far, I think I’m going to really like it!

Customer Review: The pros: I have grilled veggies and meats on mine so far. Lightweight and easy to carry and store. It works well for camping or as a backup during storm season. It is a good, inexpensive camp stove. Obviously, this is not for backpacking or all-summer backyard use but you could use it all summer if you don’t have room for a full-size grill (or don’t want a full size grill like me).The cons: The heat distribution isn’t perfect, but it isn’t too bad. One area is not as hot as the rest, so I use that spot for things that need less heat. Also, the smaller bottles are more portable but won’t last as long as the monster propane bottles in a backyard grill. It is still plenty of cooking time for several meals.

This grill offers an excellent balance of cooking capacity and true portability. The folding leg design is genuinely clever, allowing it to stand securely on a picnic table or the ground. The extra warming rack adds useful versatility. It’s a step up in size and features from basic single-burner models without getting too heavy or bulky.

Best For

Small families, couples who entertain, and anyone who wants a larger cooking surface in a still-portable package. Perfect for balcony grilling, medium-sized tailgate groups, and car camping where space for a bigger grill isn’t available.

  • Very stable and sturdy with folding legs locked in place.
  • Locking lid keeps everything secure during transport.
  • Heats up quickly and maintains temperature well.

Customer Reviews

It’s the best way to get real charcoal taste in a compact, durable form.

Pros:
  • Delivers superior, authentic charcoal-grilled flavor.
  • Extremely well-built with thick, sturdy materials.
  • Excellent heat management with dual vents and locking lid.
  • Surprisingly spacious cooking area for its footprint.
  • Very easy to clean and even fits under a kitchen sink.
Cons:
  • Requires charcoal and lighter fluid/ chimney, which is less convenient than gas.
  • Longer pre-heat and cleanup time compared to gas grills.

Customer Reviews

Customer Reviews

Customer Review: Exactly what I was looking for. I wanted a small grill because its just my husband and I but its also big enough if we had a couple over. Even heat distribution.

Customer Review: I like this grill! I wanted something for the camper for those times when I didn’t want to cook on a stove, but charcoal or wood fires were not an option. I’m glad I got it because it seems 9 months out of the year we are under a burn ban which means no fires or coals. This grill has legs that fold and a convenient carrying handle. And, even though you are not supposed to, a propane cylinder will fit inside the lid when in storage. The grate is removable for easy cleaning and there is a drip pan that slides in/out. It gets hot enough to cook steaks and there is enough room to put a pan on it for heating up beans and such. I’ve even cooked pizza on it, which barely fits and is probably not recommended. If something happens to this one I will definitely buy another one.

7. Weber Q1200 Portable Gas Grill

Key Features That Stand Out

It heats evenly, holds temperature steadily, and cooks food perfectly—from delicate fish to thick steaks. The design is mature, with no cheap plastic parts. It’s the grill you buy knowing it will work perfectly every single time and can be handed down.

Best For

  • Unmatched, consistent heat distribution and temperature control.
  • Premium cast-iron grates deliver perfect sear marks and flavor.
  • Extremely durable and well-engineered; feels like a high-end tool.
  • Convenient fold-down side tables add useful workspace.
  • Uses standard, widely available 16.4 oz propane tanks.
  • Outstanding long-term reliability and brand support.
Cons:
  • One of the more expensive options in the portable gas category.
  • The regulator placement can make it slightly awkward to carry.
  • Side tables are not designed as cutting boards (they can scar).
  • Weighs more than the lightest minimalist options.

Customer Reviews

Customer Review: I know there’s already a ton of five star reviews, I will just add a few specifics I didn’t notice in the many that I read (and address the lower rating reviews as well). This grill DOES take the standard 16.4 ounce tanks you can find anywhere (Coleman etc). A few reviews said it requires a special tank, this was either incorrect or the grill has since been changed to accommodate them. This grill doesn’t get hot enough…if you are using it as a portable crematorium. Otherwise, it takes about ten minutes to get to 420+ degrees with lid down. My first time using it I grilled up a nearly two inch thick NY strip. Came out perfect, medium rare. Second time I grilled two of them, they came out perfect. Third time I roasted a two pound tri-tip right on the grill plate (no accessories yet). That came out perfect as well – I took pictures of all three but Amazon won’t let me post pics for some reason. Trust me. Perfect. The tri tip was the test, I mostly grill steak and was worried it wouldn’t handle a thick cut like that. The trick (I learned quickly), get it hot! Let the grill get to 420-450 with kid closed, sear for two minutes on each side and then kick the heat to half way or 3/4 open on the tri tip, keep an eye on it (finger tardy) for doneness. Easy to get great results with this grill.I am camping/living/traveling out of my Subaru so portability and ease of use was essential. This fits fine on the back seat, snug against the back of the passenger seat. It cools off in five minutes or so enough that I can cook up lunch and load it back into the car by the one I’ve finished sealing up my food for the day.The only downside is the regulator sits right up against the underside of one of the handles. I can’t get my fingers under it. Minor flaw, still easy to carry but seems like it could be improved. Other flaw is the fold out trays are not designed to use as cutting boards. After three uses I have knife scars all acros one side. Not a big deal but would like to see that made if something that you can carve meat on for maximum efficiency (so I don’t have to add cutting board to the grill kit). And ideally it would be 20% smaller for my needs.Otherwise it is perfect for mobile cooking, easy to clean, well designed, flawless steaks every time. Get one!

Customer Review: Love this grill. Received one 10 years ago. Replaced a few parts but decided to just buy a new one. Perfect size for a single person; even 2 will be ok. Easy to start & to keep temperature adjusted. Grates are heavy duty & very easy to clean. Love the flip down sides to keep my spices & tools. You won’t go wrong with the purchase. Be sure to pick up a dust cover as well

The Royal Gourmet CD1519 is a serious charcoal grill in a portable package. With a massive 303 square inches of cooking space and a handy warming rack, it can handle a feast. Customer Reviews

Customer Review: UPDATE: So, after a couple of nights camping trip and put The Royal Gourmet grill through its paces for dinners. In a word, awesome. I did inch thick USDA Prime NY Strips and pork tenderloin (which, obviously require different heat levels and cooking methods). With the pork, I did a dry rub of kosher sea salt, onion & garlic powders, black pepper and Adobo, served sliced with salsa verde drizzled over the slices. That was cooked low and slow, the ability to set the level of the coals (with mesquite) and close the grill cover while maintaining a consistent temperature was key. They came out perfectly cooked, moist and very very flavorful. The steaks were, obviously, a different method, coals brought up to their highest position, sea salt, onion & garlic powders, black pepper rubbed in for a seared crust to keep the juices in. Grilling hot and fast, with finger testing the doneness on the grill, they came out perfectly seared juicy and most of all, rare. I did steaks twice on this trip and they were absolutely consistent. This grill is everything I hoped it would be!Original ReviewIt took a while to assemble but the directions were comprehensive and once together, this thing is bullet proof — and that means it’s heavy but I’m a car camper and I value comfort and great food over lightness…I haven’t used it yet because it’s been stormy here since I received the grill but I’m looking forward to a dry day so that I can finish the recommended assembly (they want you to lightly rub vegetable oil throughout the interior of the grill and then cook for two hours with briquettes to season the interior).I bought this to replace a cheap, unstable suitcase style grill that I took on camping trips for years and this one, with the obvious improvements of adjustable coal height, the ash removal tray and the door for adding charcoal is vastly superior. The thermometer in the lid is nice but I probably won’t be cooking anything that requires it while camping. I like the fact that it’s large enough to fit a small Weber chimney inside it for packing and storage (see photo) because I hate the taste of lighter fluid on the mesquite chunk charcoal that I prefer to cook with. This is going to make camping even better than it already is!

Customer Review: Easy to put together, and it works great for one or two people. It’s big you can cook everything at once. Not so big perfect size barbecue. Overall I am happy with the quality.

9. Masterbuilt MB20030819 Portable Propane Grill

Masterbuilt MB20030819 Portable Propane Grill: Folding Legs, Chrome Warming Rack, 288 Sq. In. Stainless Steel Cooking Area for Outdoor Grilling

If you want a lot of cooking space but still need it to be portable, this is a great contender. The stainless steel exterior looks sharp and is very practical for outdoor use. The U-burner design helps eliminate cold spots, and the folding mechanism is effective. It sits in a sweet spot between the tiny single-burners and the larger, non-folding models.

Small families or groups of friends who car camp or tailgate and need a spacious, easy-to-transport gas grill. Also a good choice for those who prefer the all-metal, wipe-clean aesthetic of stainless steel over painted finishes.

Pros and Cons

Pros:
  • Large cooking area and warming rack for cooking more food at once.
  • Stainless steel construction is durable and easy to maintain.
  • U-shaped burner provides good, even heat across the grate.
  • Folding legs work well for compact storage.
  • Reaches very high temperatures (tested up to 600°F).
Cons:
  • Some units may arrive with minor shipping damage (welds broken, as noted in a review).
  • Customer support experience can be inconsistent if issues arise.
  • At 20+ lbs, it’s on the heavier side for its size class.
  • The design is a bit more generic-looking than premium brands.

Customer Reviews

Customer Review: This is the BEST grill! It is small enough to store, pack up and bring to a tailgate but big enough to cook everything you need! The plates are removable and can be easily cleaned. The grill folds up and is not to heavy to transport. I’ve had other grills before this but love how this one is portable. It also comes in a few different colors.

Complete Buying Guide for Best Portable Grills

Essential Factors We Consider

Choosing the right portable grill hinges on matching its features to your specific use case. First, decide on fuel type: propane offers convenience, instant heat, and easy temperature control, while charcoal provides authentic smoky flavor but requires more time and cleanup. Next, assess cooking surface area (measured in square inches). A 150-200 sq in surface typically serves 2-4 people, while 250+ sq in is better for groups. Weight and dimensions are critical for true portability—consider if you need to carry it far from the car. Build quality (stainless steel vs. coated steel) affects durability and rust resistance. Finally, look for key features like folding legs, a locking lid, a built-in thermometer, and ease of cleaning (dishwasher-safe parts are a huge plus).

Budget Planning

Portable grill prices range from under $50 for basic models to over $300 for premium brands like Weber. For a reliable, mid-range gas grill with good features, budget between $80 and $150. High-end portables with superior materials and engineering (like the Weber Q series) run $200-$300+. Charcoal grills are generally less expensive, with good options between $40 and $100. Remember to factor in ongoing costs: propane tanks or charcoal, as well as potential accessories like a cover, grill tools, or a separate thermometer.

Final Thoughts

The “best” portable grill is the one that best fits your lifestyle. A solo van lifer has vastly different needs than a family of four who camps monthly. Our top pick, the Cuisinart CGG-306, offers the best overall blend of power, space, and portability for most users. The Weber Q1200 is the investment-grade choice for uncompromising performance, while the Royal Gourmet CD1519 is the champion for charcoal lovers. Don’t just buy the cheapest or the most powerful—think about how, where, and with whom you’ll be grilling most often. That focus will lead you to the perfect grill that will provide delicious meals and great memories for years to come.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Can I use a 1-pound or 20-pound propane tank on a portable grill?

A: Most portable gas grills are designed for the small, disposable 1-pound (16.4 oz) propane cylinders because they are lightweight and easy to carry. Some, like the Coleman RoadTrip 285, can also connect to a standard 20-pound tank with an optional hose and regulator (sold separately). Always check the manufacturer’s specifications to ensure compatibility and safe operation.

Q: How do I clean a portable grill effectively?

A: After each use, while the grill is still warm (not hot), brush the grates with a sturdy grill brush to remove food debris. For gas grills, periodically clean the burner ports with a soft brush to prevent clogs. For charcoal grills, empty the ash from the tray. Many modern grills feature dishwasher-safe cooking grates (like the Cuisinart Grillster), which makes deep cleaning much easier. Always refer to your manual for specific cleaning instructions.

Q: Are portable grills safe to use on wooden tables or decks?

A: Generally, it is not safe to place any grill directly on a wooden surface due to the risk of sparks, embers, or heat damage. Always use a certified grill mat or a sturdy, non-flammable surface (like a concrete pad, stone, or heavy-duty metal sheet) underneath the grill. Ensure the grill is stable and cannot tip over, and keep it away from overhanging branches or structures.

Q: Which is better for flavor: gas or charcoal?

A: This is a classic debate. Charcoal (especially lump charcoal) produces a more pronounced smoky flavor that many purists prefer. It can also reach higher searing temperatures. Propane gas grills offer convenience, precise temperature control, and quick startup. Some gas grills use “smoker boxes” or wood chips to add smoke flavor. Your choice depends on whether you prioritize convenience (gas) or maximum smoky taste (charcoal).

Q: How long will a 1-pound propane tank last on a portable grill?

Whether you’re a weekend warrior or a full-time adventurer, the right portable grill can make any location feel like home. Based on our testing, the Cuisinart CGG-306 stands out as the most versatile and powerful all-around choice, making it our top recommendation for most buyers. If you’re on a tighter budget, the Charbroil Convective Grill delivers remarkable value. For the charcoal devotee, the Royal Gourmet CD1519 is in a class of its own.
